Chapter Twenty

Fuck, his brain hurt.

That tosser Ross had hit him over the head with something heavy. And Callum, that fucker, could read Ross’s mind, so he’d known exactly what the man was about to do.

Mal groaned and rubbed the back of his skull. His hand came away wet. He was bleeding, though he could sense the wound was already healing.

Had he recovered some of his powers with the loss of another ring on the sigil?

Callum had sensed something was different about him. Mal distinctly remembered him asking not who he was, but what he was.

He pushed himself up and studied his surroundings. He was in a cell, a small room about nine feet by nine feet, lying on the floor beside a cot. That was the only furniture except for a food dispenser on the wall opposite. There were no windows—he was guessing he was deep inside the ship—though the door had a small glass panel. And that was it.

He swung his legs over the side and sat, head hanging, breathing deeply. Waiting for his mind to clear so he could find a way forward.

This was what it was to be human. He didn’t like it.

Callum had suggested they would send him back to the Trakis Two. Was that what he wanted? Would he have a choice? Rico had told him he would be stuck in human form forever if he returned. Assuming the vampire would accept him back at all. And if not, what would Callum and his council do? Nothing good. They’d probably shove him out the airlock.

Even if Rico allowed him to return, would he go and leave Hope to their mercy? This was all Rico’s fault. He would never ask him for help.

Callum and the others wouldn’t harm her, would they? He didn’t think humans had had the death penalty in effect for a long time, but then, over the last years, he’d hardly paid attention to what humans were up to.

Then he remembered Katia saying that the Freedom League’s leader had been sentenced to death before he’d been rescued by his people. Maybe in the chaos before the exodus they’d brought the death sentence back. And they said he was evil…

He couldn’t wrap his head around the fact Hope had deceived him so spectacularly. He’d believed everything about her. Including her story of why she had killed the old security officer. He hadn’t even doubted it. She’d played him.

He hadn’t thought that was possible.

How could he have been so wrong?

How could he have believed her to be purely good?

But even as that thought flashed through his mind, he rejected it. Could she still be good?

Why take others’ words that she was bad? Though…she had lied to him. A lot. And she had killed Jeff Connors. That wasn’t in dispute. But maybe it had been an accident. And she had denied being a terrorist.

She’d also been the reason he’d lost two of the rings. Only one remained, and then he would have his powers back, and he would show these puny humans—including that bastard Callum—who was in charge.
